Description

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are a major threat to the modern Internet, rendering critical services inaccessible to legitimate clients. Thus, smart mechanisms for effectively mitigating DDoS attacks are largely required by network administrators. In this presentation, we will demonstrate our work on integrating the RARE platform with Firewall on Demand (FoD) for efficient DDoS attack mitigation. RARE and FoD are both open-source projects developed within the GÉANT community. RARE develops solutions that target various use cases related to research and education purposes, including DDoS attack protection. FoD enables network engineers to define flow-based firewall filters, which are subsequently propagated to upstream networks via BGP FlowSpec. As a GÉANT service, FoD allows for the dissemination of mitigation rules to the GÉANT backbone without the time-consuming process of contacting Network Operations Centers (NOCs).
