Single Presentation - 25 min Rethinking Federations

Speaker

Christoph Graf (Switch)

Description

Switch was among the first NRENs to establish a national identity federation as a production service in 2005. A first strategic realignment resulted in the launch of Switch edu-ID in 2015 to better support life-long learning and to increase synergies. Since then, we left the service architecture largely untouched – while the world around us continued to transform. Switch started the “re-thinking edu-ID” journey in 2025 to re-align with the new realities and making it fit for the next decade. Join this session to learn about our wake-up call, the community consultation process, the scenarios we identified and what our next steps will be.

What will the TNC audience take away from your talk?

We need the interaction with the TNC community to make certain our identity services stay anchored in and interoperable with the international NREN community. We aim at addressing CTOs, IT and business architects as well as product managers for this purpose.

In return, we aim at providing inspiration and insights into the re-alignment process applicable to identity services in other federations – but also to other services within their own realm requiring an element of “digital sisu”.

Are you a first time speaker at TNC? No
