Over 20 European tech organizations, led by OpenNebula Systems, launched Virt8ra.eu in early 2025, an open source initiative focused on building Europe's first sovereign virtualization stack. Part of the €3B IPCEI-CIS project, this collaboration created a European technological ecosystem around vendor-neutral cloud-edge continuum management and virtualization. Virt8ra enables interoperability and portability for applications, supporting low-latency use cases and reducing dependence on hyperscalers. In this talk we will present this initiative, its main technological results, and the different options for third-parties to join this community and contribute with their components and innovations.
