Description
Storage needs for research data are growing at an unprecedented pace. While datasets increase in volume, complexity, and retention requirements, the institutions are also expected to comply with security standards while collaborating in an international space. The storage solutions are often self-hosted and built using open-source storage components. Building these services from scratch, while meeting all requirements is challenging. Within the GÉANT GN5-2 project, a small team is developing an architectural blueprint and a multi-year roadmap for a federated, pan-European storage infrastructure. We describe the core elements of this blueprint, and the potential impact for the wider European research community.
