Description

This presentation details the deployment of a national-scale precision time and frequency distribution infrastructure based on White Rabbit (WR) technology, which runs directly over CESNET’s existing active DWDM network. This project moves beyond typical dark fiber deployments to offer a blueprint for NRENs seeking to maximize infrastructure utilization and support advanced services without costly network duplication. We detail an architecture where time transfer in the L-Band coexists with C-Band data traffic, enabled by SDN-controlled bidirectional amplifiers. Attendees will learn how this NetDevOps approach allows for seamless integration, real-time telemetry, and automated management of highly sensitive bidirectional transmissions over long-haul networks.

What will the TNC audience take away from your talk?

Attendees will gain a practical blueprint for deploying metrology-grade timing services (White Rabbit) on live DWDM infrastructure, maximizing fiber return on investment. The key takeaway is the proven technical strategy of utilizing the L-Band for the signal transmissions over a single fiber with bidirectional amplification, coexisting seamlessly with high-speed data traffic in the C-Band. Furthermore, the audience will learn a concrete, operational model for managing this sophisticated optical layer through the integration of SDN-enabled CzechLight BiDi EDFA amplifiers, using open-source automation and monitoring tools like Ansible, Prometheus, and Grafana for reliable, real-time service management and telemetry.
