Description
SANReN (Mobile) Connect is a National Research and Education Network (NREN) service that provides students with internet access over commercial mobile networks at no cost to the student, using reverse-billed (zero-rated) IP address connectivity initially funded by SANReN (during the proof-of-concept). Students register through federated authentication using the South African Identity Federation (SAFIRE), ensuring that only eligible users from participating South African universities can enrol, while institutional eligibility and allocations are enforced.
What will the TNC audience take away from your talk?
A concrete blueprint for “eduroam-like, but on mobile” connectivity: how an NREN can use reverse-billed/zero-rated IP, VPN tunnelling, and federated identity to give students internet access anywhere there’s mobile coverage; even with no airtime.
