Description

Identity federations often invest heavily in policies, metadata aggregation and operations, but the main entry point for new participants is still the documentation they follow to deploy their first IdP or SP. For many organisations, their initial contact with federated identity is a guide for Shibboleth or SimpleSAMLphp and that experience will largely shape how they perceive the federation and its complexity. This lightning talk shares practical lessons learned from maintaining the IDEM GARR AAI tutorials and eduGAIN training materials, which provide copy-paste friendly, Debian-oriented guides for Shibboleth, SimpleSAMLphp, and related tools. The core message is that user-facing documentation is not just a quick way to get software installed, but a strategic asset that can lower barriers, improve security, and scale support.

What will the TNC audience take away from your talk?

The main take‑home message is that by investing in user‑first documentation, federation communities can reduce support effort, improve configuration quality, make it easier to train and grow new federation operators, and enable more diverse organisations to participate confidently.
