Description

National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) have built global impact through physical networks and identity federations. This session explores building a third pillar: collaborative human networks for cloud infrastructure. Internet2's Cloud Infrastructure Community Program (CICP) leverages hyperscaler standardization to create workforce multipliers. By sharing solutions, data, and skills across common platforms, NRENs transform individual institutional efforts into collective community capabilities. Learn how structured communities of practice, cohort-based learning, and data benchmarking create network effects that benefit all participants.

What will the TNC audience take away from your talk?

Participants will leave with a framework for extending NREN community-building models into the cloud infrastructure domain. Specific takeaways include:
1. The Workforce Multiplier: How to use the standardization of hyperscalers to enable friction-free sharing of solutions which effectively expands the capacity of institutional IT teams.
2. Building on Foundations: How to position cloud communities as the logical next step after physical connectivity and identity federation.
3. Metrics for Success: How to use data benchmarking and Cloud Efficiency Indexes to measure community impact and drive institutional optimization.
4. Strategic Collaboration: How to extend these efforts through partnerships with national organizations like EDUCAUSE and events like the Higher Ed Cloud Forum.
5. Relevance to NRENs: Concrete evidence and transferable lessons for the global NREN community on maintaining vendor neutrality while building deep technical partnerships.
