Description
Across the research and education community, organizations face a dilemma where adopting cloud and containers has made service delivery more complex rather than simpler. RNP is addressing this complexity by building an Internal Developer Platform that offers well designed self service paths for common services. The platform is organized around four pillars: Speed, Safety, Efficiency, and Scalability. This session describes how RNP treats the platform as a product to provide golden paths that reduce cognitive load while maintaining flexibility for service teams.
What will the TNC audience take away from your talk?
They will leave with very concrete, “actionable” things, not just high-level inspiration. In particular, the audience will take away:
A clear mental model of platformisation for NRENs and universities – how to think about an Internal Developer Platform (IDP) beyond tools, using pillars like speed, safety, efficiency and scalability.
Practical patterns they can reuse – examples of “golden paths”, self-service workflows (e.g. DNS/CDN/security templates), and standardised application blueprints that reduce cognitive load on service teams.
An operating model they can adapt – how to treat the platform as a product (roles, feedback loops, scorecards) and avoid the “golden cage” anti-pattern where the platform becomes rigid or imposed.
A realistic starting roadmap – ideas on how to start small with early adopters, show value quickly, and evolve towards an NREN-scale platform over time.
