Single Presentation - 25 min Scaling Education the NREN Way: A Federated Approach to Course Data Federate, Don’t Fragment — Connecting Students Across Borders

Speakers

Jeroen Goosen (SURF) Patrik Maltusch (EUNIS / Aalto University)

Description

Across Europe, universities collaborate through alliances and cross-border programmes, yet students still struggle to discover courses beyond national and institutional boundaries. Course data remains fragmented, duplicated, and locked into local systems. This session presents fed-eduhub, a prototype for a federated, scalable architecture that interconnects national platforms such as SURFeduhub (NL) and Opin.fi (FI) using OEAPI (Open Education API). Rather than creating a central catalogue, fed-eduhub demonstrates how NRENs can jointly operate a DNS-like federated trust network for course discoverability. This approach reduces duplication, preserves institutional and national sovereignty, and offers a realistic, standards-based path towards European-wide educational interoperability.

What will the TNC audience take away from your talk?

Beyond the technical demonstration, the talk aims to spark reflection within the GÉANT community. Educational interoperability is rapidly gaining political momentum, and NRENs are well positioned to shape the foundations of a shared European digital infrastructure. The audience will take away:
- a clear understanding of how a federated architecture for course data can work,
why NRENs are uniquely positioned to operate such a system,
- how small steps at national level can scale into large European impact,
- practical insights into metadata harmonisation, trust models and open standards.
This session is timely, relevant and actionable for TNC: it connects NREN expertise, real institutional needs and the broader European vision. It builds on the legacy of eduroam and eduGAIN and invites the community to shape the next federated infrastructure for education.
