Description
National Research and Education Networks increasingly require scalable and secure mechanisms to deploy monitoring services across distributed infrastructures. This presentation introduces the nmaas Active Monitoring use-case, which enables application deployment on remote compute clusters using the nmaas multi-tenant PaaS. The solution has been validated in practice by RENATER through a nationwide rollout of a distributed network monitoring infrastructure based on perfSONAR. Leveraging nmaas’ multi-cluster Kubernetes support and webhook-driven automation, RENATER achieved centralized lifecycle management of edge-deployed measurement nodes. The talk showcases the deployment architecture and operational lessons learned, and highlights nmaas as a flexible solution for distributed monitoring automation.
What will the TNC audience take away from your talk?
The TNC audience will gain a clear understanding of how nmaas can serve as a practical and scalable platform for deploying active monitoring services across distributed research and education networks. Through RENATER’s real-world implementation, attendees will see how features such as multi-cluster orchestration, webhook-driven automation, and seamless integration with existing operational systems—including authoritative sources of truth like Maat—enable consistent, automated rollout and lifecycle management of monitoring nodes at national scale. Participants will leave with concrete insights into deployment architecture, operational workflows, and lessons learned, as well as an actionable blueprint for how similar approaches can streamline monitoring, improve maintainability, and reduce operational complexity in other NREN environments.
